Legendary Monkey King Demo

Sun Wukong stole his golden staff from the Dragon Palace, and in PG Soft's Legendary Monkey King, released in October 2021, that staff is what makes the reels grow. Every time it lands, the reel it sits on gets one symbol taller, so a spin that starts at 1,024 ways can reach 16,807. The Monkey King himself is the wild, his rival Erlang Shen and the hound Xiaotian are the top symbols, and the scene is the Heavenly Peach Garden he was sent to guard. My 100 demo spins at 12.00 ended 1,807.20 ahead, mostly thanks to one free spins round on the fourth spin.

Five reels that do not stay at four rows

Every spin begins with five reels of four symbols, 4 to the fifth power, which is the 1,024 ways shown above the board. Wins pay from the leftmost reel for three or more of a kind on adjacent reels, matching symbols on the same reel multiply into more ways, and winners explode so new symbols can fall in.

The staff is the Expanding Reel symbol. Wherever it appears, the reel gains one extra symbol position, and the ways count rises with it. A reel stops growing at seven symbols, so five full reels give 7 to the fifth, 16,807 ways. The wild replaces everything except the staff and the scatter, and five of it pay 100 points as a symbol in its own right.

The table pays per way. A base spin costs 20 points, so five of a kind on one way returns its value divided by 20:

Seven cascades and 606.60 in the base game

My best spin outside the feature was the 22nd. It opened at 1,024 ways with a small win of 12.00, and over the next rounds the staff landed twice and the board grew to 1,600, then 1,920 and 2,304 ways. Two of the cascades were large: red gourds ran through a pair of Monkey King wilds for 216.00, and later a board full of teapots paid 297.00.

Legendary Monkey King gourds through wilds 216

Seven winning rounds in a row (12.00, 27.00, 216.00, 3.00, 297.00, 39.60, 12.00) added up to 606.60, just over 50 stakes. There is no multiplier in the base game, so all of that came from ways: the more the staff stretched the reels, the more combinations each cascade could find.

Free spins: the multiplier goes up after every win

It takes three scatters for 8 free spins, plus 2 for each scatter after the third. Every winning cascade in the feature lifts the multiplier by one from its x1 start, and the rules never set it back, so a high value survives into the next free spin. In both of my rounds the extra rows from the staff also stayed in place: the ways count kept climbing through the feature and never dropped back to 1,024.

The first round arrived on spin 4. By the fifth free spin the reels showed 4,320 ways and the multiplier had reached x4. That spin cascaded from x4 through x8: a round of hounds and gourds worth 84.00 was paid at x5 as 420.00, and that one free spin ended at 676.20.

By the last spin the counter showed x11, and the eight free spins closed at 1,237.20, 103 times the stake.

Legendary Monkey King free spins total 1237

A second round on spin 59 started slowly and paid 176.40, with the multiplier finishing at x6. The growing-ways idea is close to Thai River Wonders, where tall symbols change the count, but there the ways can shrink again, while here the staff only ever adds.

Figures from PG Soft and from my session

PG Soft lists the game at 96.71% RTP with a 50,000x maximum win. My stake stayed on the 12.00 default for all 100 spins (size 0.30, level 2), one point of the paytable being 0.60. The demo is free and sits with the rest of the PG Soft slots on this site.

The staff makes the game

Without the staff, Legendary Monkey King would be an ordinary 1,024-ways cascade slot with a modest paytable. With it, a long cascade keeps adding ways while it runs, which is how a 12.00 opener became 606.60 in the base game. The free spins add the climbing multiplier on top of a board that only gets wider, and my first round, at 103 stakes, carried the whole session.

Legendary Monkey King FAQ

How does the Expanding Reel symbol work?
When the golden staff lands, one more symbol position is added to that reel, raising the number of ways. A reel can grow to seven symbols, the staff stops appearing on a reel that already has seven, and five reels of seven make 16,807 ways.
Is there a multiplier in the base game?
No. Only the free spins have one: x1 at the start of the feature and one step up per winning cascade.
How many free spins do you get?
8 for three scatters and 2 more for every additional scatter. The feature can be retriggered.
Does the Monkey King wild pay?
Yes, 50, 80 or 100 points for three, four or five, and it substitutes for every symbol except the staff and the scatter.
What is the RTP of Legendary Monkey King?
96.71%, with a 50,000x maximum win, according to PG Soft.
