Shaolin Soccer borrows its idea from the 2001 Stephen Chow film: a team of kung fu monks who play football with their fighting skills. The slot came out in March 2020, with five players as the main symbols, each in his own colour, from the Gold Striker to the Green Midfielder. The trick that makes it worth playing happens on the middle reel. When one player fills it, every player on the other reels becomes him.

Four rows on five reels carry 25 fixed lines. A line pays left to right, and only its best combination counts. Both special symbols, the football wild and the golden trophy scatter, are limited to the three middle reels.
The players are the money symbols. Five Gold Strikers on a line pay 1,000 points, the Red Keeper 500, the Purple Defender 300, the Blue Winger 200 and the Green Midfielder 150. The card ranks below them stop at 50.
| Symbol | 3 / 4 / 5 on a line | Five on a line vs stake |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Striker | 20 / 100 / 1,000 | 40x |
| Red Keeper | 20 / 50 / 500 | 20x |
| Purple Defender | 20 / 40 / 300 | 12x |
| Blue Winger | 10 / 35 / 200 | 8x |
| Green Midfielder | 10 / 30 / 150 | 6x |
| A, K | 5 / 25 / 50 | 2x |
| Q, J, 10 | 5 / 15 / 30 | 1.2x |
In the right-hand column five on a line is set against the 25 points one spin costs. Three of a kind pays little for every symbol, so the game depends on lines that reach reel five.
Players Transformation: one player for the whole board
When reel three shows four of the same player, the Players Transformation Feature starts, and every player symbol on reels one, two, four and five changes into that player. Card ranks, wilds and scatters stay as they are. The more players the other reels happen to show, the more lines fill at once.
On my 59th spin reel three held three Purple Defenders with the football wild under them, and that was enough to set it off.
The Gold Strikers on reels one, two and five turned purple, and the bottom row became five Purple Defenders through the wild.
My bet was the 15.00 default, size 0.30 at level 2 on 25 lines, so one paytable point was worth 0.60. Five Purple Defenders pay 300 points, 180.00 per line, and two lines of them made 360.00, a "5 of a kind" banner and 24 stakes. The change cost me three Gold Strikers, the most valuable player, but as Defenders they completed two lines.
Three wilds on the middle row: 255.00
The other big spin needed no transformation. On spin 91 the wild landed on reels two, three and four at once, and Blue Wingers on reels one and five closed lines through all three. Two lines of five Blue Wingers paid 120.00 each, a smaller line added 15.00, and the spin came to 255.00.
Spins 82, 84 and 63 brought 192.00, 144.00 and 120.00, each from player lines of four or five. Outside those few, wins were small: 29 of my 100 spins paid, most of them card-rank lines worth a few coins.
Pick a player, pick the risk
Three trophy scatters on reels two, three and four open a selection screen with the five players. Each offers a different number of free spins: the Gold Striker 4, the Red Keeper 6, the Purple Defender 8, the Blue Winger 10 and the Green Midfielder 12. The rules say plainly that fewer spins mean higher volatility, and each option shows its own maximum win. Scatters do not appear during the free spins, so the round cannot be extended. I never collected three scatters in 100 spins, so this description is based on the rules.
A football slot from PG Soft with a different feel is Futebol Fever, a compact 3x3 game with paid reel respins in place of a transformation.
RTP and the session
The return is 96.93% by the studio's figures, and wins stop at 4,000x the bet, modest next to the 50,000x or 100,000x of many of the studio's slots. The session closed at 100,180.00 from 100,000.00, so 1,680.00 came back from 1,500.00 staked, and the two biggest spins accounted for 615.00 of it. More PG Soft games with their own demos are in the slot list on the home page.

Kung fu with a narrow top end
Shaolin Soccer is a line slot built around one strong feature. Most spins pay nothing or a few coins, and the session's value came from two moments: a transformation that filled two lines with Purple Defenders and three wilds lining up for the Blue Wingers. The ceiling is lower than in most PG Soft games, and my session matched it: the best spin paid 24 stakes and nothing came close to the 4,000x cap.
